About my Internship

As an intern at Courtyard Marriott you are expected to work hard, show up ready to provide excellent customer service, and provide a positive attitude. Being an intern, you might be asked to do tasks that you are not used to doing, for example wash all the restaurant dishes because your dishwasher did not show up or go on the roof and examine the elevator room. Courtyard Marriott really pushed me and showed me what hard work looked like and I am very grateful for that.

Courtyard did have some qualifications that they were looking for in interns. One being are you seeking a degree in hospitality? Two being is the intern excited to be here and learn about the hotel industry? Three being is the timing of the internship beneficial to the hotel and will the intern benefit the hotel?

Marriott International provides great benefits for their employees. If you are a full time employee, you receive health care, bonuses for perfect sells, discounts at other Marriott properties, and so much more. While being an intern, I did not receive the health care but I did receive the discounted hotel rates at other Marriott properties. Another great benefit I received while working for Marriott was the networking aspect. I was able to meet so many different people, like the president of the Gaylord, and introduce myself and get my name out there. The benefits of networking are what you make of them, so take full advantage of meeting all the great people.

While interning this summer, I learned so many new things. I learned that supervising a hotel was so much more than sitting in an office. It is covering breaks and putting out fires as my supervisor calls it. We are constantly running around dealing with some kind issue at the hotel, may it be an unhappy guest about a room or the elevator getting stuck between floors with hotel guests in it. A supervisor is always on the move trying to make sure everything and everyone is happy. While working with events, I learned what it actually takes to be an event coordinator. Since I got to work hands on with the hotel event planner I saw in action what she did each day and all the behind the scenes action it took to make the event thrive.

My internship was one for the books. It showed me an entire new industry that I was not familiar with. It introduced me to new people and a completely new place. It pushed my limits at times which only made me work harder. If I can recommend one thing it would be to go somewhere new and something new. It really shows you what is out there and what the world has to offer.
